The History of Michigan Beers: Come Drink with Us at The Corner

Michigan is a state known for its local beers. Whether you’re chilling out and enjoying a cold one in our beautiful summers or cozying up with a hearty stout in the winter, beer is the perfect companion to many of our favorite activities. But did you know that the history of Michigan beer is just as rich as the flavor?

If you want to learn about the history of Michigan beers, you’re in the right place. The Corner in Ferndale is here to help you get a taste of the best local breweries in the area, starting with a little backstory. When you’re ready to experience them for yourself, you know where to find us!

Michigan Beers: A History

The beer industry in the U.S. is worth more than $115 billion. As Americans, we simply love beer. We drink it with our meals, relax with a bottle at home, and enjoy it with friends in bars and clubs.

Beer gives you the best of both worlds: a light buzz and a social attitude but without the heavy alcoholic aftertaste (or aftereffects) of hard liquors. We all know how passing around a few bottles of beer easily creates a cheerful atmosphere—and when you live in Michigan, it tastes great, too.

Michigan ranks 10th in overall beer production in the country, and 6th in breweries, microbreweries, and brewpubs, according to the Michigan Brewers Guild. Our fair state is estimated to produce more than 900,000 barrels of beer annually, making it one of the most important industries in the state.

Thankfully, if you live in Ferndale,  you don’t have to travel far to find a local spot that serves the best Michigan-made craft beer.

When Did Beer Production in Michigan Start?

The records tell us that Michigan brewing began at least as early as the 1830s. The state now has around 400 breweries, the sixth most in the country.

History buffs paint Englishman John Pannell as the first to open a brewery in Michigan in 1836. It didn’t take long for others to follow suit. But the brewery industry really took off when Germans migrated to the state in the 1840s.

Before the Germans arrived, breweries mainly created dark ales with strong flavors. Germans brought the recipe for pale lagers with them. Options expanded quickly, as did breweries, micro-breweries, and pubs in the U.S.

The 1860s is considered the golden age for breweries, a big part of which was thanks to Michigan.

In 1893, six Michigan breweries joined forces to open Grand Rapids Brewing Company, one of the state's largest beer companies.

During Prohibition in 1918, many larger breweries created non-alcoholic beverages similar to beer. This creativity further blossomed in the decades since, and delicious Michigan beers are found all over bars in Ferndale and other major cities.
